In the past, there were no electric toothbrushes or running water, so people had little to no hygiene. People were not aware that germs could be killed by boiling water, this discovery was made much later. As has been said, it is no wonder that life expectancy was so low. Many died in childhood and lots of women died on the delivery table. There was little attention to hygiene during childbirth, so things often went wrong.
